Following Jesus Means Daily Death to Self

Jesus turned from the disciples and spoke to everyone listening:

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

This is not a call for a few radical disciples. It is the normal Christian life. In the Roman world, taking up a cross meant walking to your own execution. Jesus was not talking about minor inconveniences. He was talking about daily identification with His death.

The paradox is clear: the person who spends their life protecting their comfort, reputation, and control will ultimately lose what matters most. But the person who surrenders their life to Jesus will actually find it. What we give to Him, He keeps. What we try to keep for ourselves, we lose.

This is why Jesus asks the sobering question: “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”

Following Jesus is not about adding Him to our lives. It is about dying to our lives so that we can truly live.
